What is rum? And where does it come from?

The history of rum dates back to the 17th century, when European settlers introduced sugar cane to the Caribbean. Sugar cane plantations multiplied, and planters looked for ways to add value to their surplus harvests. The result was rum, made by distilling fermented sugarcane juice. The first traces of rum production date back to Barbados in the early 17th century, but the technique quickly spread throughout the Caribbean region.

The flourishing rum trade contributed to the colonial economy, but it was also marred by the triangular trade and slavery. Over time, rum has gained worldwide renown, with variations in styles and production methods specific to each producing region, testifying to the cultural and geographical influence on this emblematic drink.
